To this day there continues to be a large taboo surrounding women’s bodies. Femininity remains a social construction reinforced by consumerism and patriarchal idealizations. Women are largely accepted when primped and polished but are frowned upon when appearing in their natural state. It is this reaction of disgust that is focused on within my work. Arduous beauty routines are carried out by women in attempt to achieve maximum attractiveness and desirable levels of femininity. My work draws upon the often grotesque nature of these beauty routines in order to emphasize the powerful influence that fabricated beauty standards have on women and what lengths that are gone to obtain them.
